What Is a Dye Blocker?

A dye blocker is a special ink layer used in garment printing to prevent dye migration. This is especially important when printing on polyester or blended fabrics, where heat during curing can cause the fabric’s dye to move into the ink layer. 

Why Dye Blockers Matter

Dye migration can ruin prints by causing colors to shift, often turning white or light-colored prints into dull tones. Using a dye blocker helps:

  • Prevent color bleeding: Stops fabric dyes from affecting the printed design.
  • Maintain print quality: Keeps colors bright, clean, and true to the original design.
  • Improve durability: Ensures prints remain stable after washing and wear.
  • Enable polyester printing: Makes it possible to print on sportswear fabrics and synthetics.

Without a dye blocker, prints on polyester garments may become inconsistent or unusable.

Dye Blockers in Screen Printing

In screen printing, dye blockers are applied as an underbase layer before the main ink colors. Key characteristics include:

  • Low-bleed or barrier inks: Specially formulated inks designed to resist dye migration.
  • Underbase application: Printed beneath the design to create a protective layer.
  • Controlled curing: Proper temperature is critical to activate the blocker without triggering dye migration.
  • Multiple layers if needed: Some applications require additional layers for stronger protection.

While this adds an extra step to an already complicated screen printing process, it’s essential for printing on dark or synthetic fabrics.
